Preparing to Meet

This assemblage of footage from Cork City's carceral architecture combines moving images from 500 miles of walking I conducted in 2021 in Ireland. I have called this embodied process of visually linking a range of institutions (not only jails, but also Mother and Baby Homes, Magdalene Laundries, and in-patient psychiatric spaces) "Walking the Fault Lines," in order to gesture toward the intricate connections amongst what James M. Smith calls the "architecture of containment." I paired this footage with audio of myself reading from a pamplet distributed to individuals seeking family reunification in the wake of Ireland's widespread forced adoptions throughout the 20th century.
